Ancient Sword - The Philippine Kampilan Sword Reviewed
The Philippine Kampilan Sword is an Ancient Sword that has a single edged blade. It is used most often in the Archipelago which are the over 7000 islands which comprise of the Philippines. This Battle Ready Sword was used around the 16th and 20th Centuries. This was before the US and Spain Colonized this area. The Kampilan has a tapered blade that is much broader, and the point on this weapon is thinner than it is at the base.
One unique feature of the Kampilan is that you will see a protruding spikelet toward the tip of the blade at the spine. It also has a hilt that is bifurcated. This bifurcation is believed to represent the open mouth of a creature. One of the biggest idiosyncracies of this weapon is its large size. The overall size of this Ancient Sword is about 36 to 40 inches long, and is the largest Filipino Sword we know of. However note that there are also small Kampilans that are out there as well.
The only other Philippine Weapon we know of that is as long as the Kampilan would be the
Panabas. This is another Long Sword used by the Philippines, and occasionally you will find one of these up to 48 Inches. The Kampilan is similar to the Klewang, as the blade by the hilt is unusually narrow, and gradually gets wider until the end of the blade, almost like the shape of a Trapezoid. You can usually see holes in these blades around the tip that are occasionally made with brass.
Some offer engravings that span the entire length of the blade. This sword is made to be used with two hands, although some do use it with just one hand. Sometimes practitioners used a talismanic cloth at the hilt that was attached to their hand to prevent this weapon from slipping.
Occasionally a Chain Mail Covering was also attached to the hilt as to prevent any injuries to the hands. The Cross Guard that was located above the grip usually had Large Metal Staples that stuck out from it. Cheap versions were made form Hard Wood, but more pricey versions were made of ivory or bone.
