A Short History Regarding The Impression Of Japanese Art On Europe
After the first commercial contacts with Europe in the sixteenth century, notably with Portugal, Holland and Spain, Japan shut its doors to Westerners at the beginning of the Edo era (1603-1868). Only Korea, China and Holland had the privilege of dealing with the Japanese. It was only in 1854 that the first commercial treaty was signed with the West. This treaty led to the country's openness to the West and promoted trade relations. Many merchants brought back art objects and Japanese prints in Europe.
Hence, Japan became a source of inspiration for French and European painters.
The first agreement signed with France in October 1858 will gradually introduce many works. After the Universal Exposition of 1867, a Japanese born in arranging a monthly dinner.At these dinners was almost all Japanese. The Expo had an immediate impact on the Impressionist movement.
By 1875, the term ''Japonism'' was printed and inspiration from Japan began to change the decor of the interior and thereby attest to the sophistication of their owners. Critics of this art their favorite subject. This new taste influenced fashion, but not only, this movement also penetrated industries of art: bronzes, ceramics, crystal, furniture, fabrics, wallpaper and much more ...
In the years 1870, fans are their collection, go to the discovery of this country, organizing exhibitions. Monet had more than 250 prints now on display at Giverny. He also painted his wife in a kimono in the style of Utamaro. The Amsterdam museum presents 400 prints by Vincent Van Gogh. He wrote to his brother Theo in 1886: "All my work is constructed so that the Japanese. He organized in 1887, an exhibition that went unnoticed. The Impressionists, Degas, Manet, C?zanne were influenced by these prints. Toulouse-Lautrec, Gustav Klimt also reflect this influence. And what about the Nabis (Vuillard, Bonnard, etc)?
Literature was also under the impression of Japan with the brothers Goncourt, Emile Zola, Charles Baudelaire, Samuel Bing and so on.
If we were now tracing the history of this artistic expression should refer to the seventh century. Paintings are kept at the temple of Todai-ji Temple in Nara. These are works on which exerted very strong influence of the Chinese Tang dynasty (618-907). In general, Chinese art has greatly influenced Japan, the art of printmaking in Japan has adapted it by adding color.
