Get a old string out of beads in a necklace.?
How do you get the old string out of beads in a necklace. The string is stuck and I don`t wish to harm the beads (they are like pearl but made of rock). Thank you!
Usually, "string" will just pull out of bead holes but there may have been some glue used at some point too, or if the beads are plastic they may have softened around the string with heat at some point, etc.
For the first situation, try soaking the string for awhile (with the beads--as long as they're waterproof) in water or even soapy water since many glues will soften with long soaking, then try pulling the string out.
You could also try heating them in a low heat oven awhile to soften any plastic or glue, then try pulling out while warm.
If those things don't work, you can re-drill the holes with a "bead reamer" rasp if possible, or with handheld drill bit (in a pin vise, etc) or with a drill bit in an electric drill. Use the smallest drill bit or reamer you can, then work up in sizes if the smallest doesn't do what you want.
If you can't do that, then you'll just have to cut the strings as close as possible to the beads and maybe sand or burn the rest off, then use them in some other way.
Or if the "pearl" beads really are made from rock or another natural material like perhaps abalone shell, you might be able to burn the string even inside the hole. If any black soot gets on the rock/pearl/shell, it should be able to just be washed away or wipe with alcohol, etc.
